Consistent readers of this blog know that the only two things I despise in life
are Jimmy Buffet and political cartoons (you can read my previous thoughts on political
cartoons, here). And
nothing makes my hatred of political cartoons grow more than a pending presidential transition.
For
the next three weeks, we will see the same drawing: Bush, crashing (into the ground) a car / train / boat / airplane,
with “economy” / “USA” / “Iraq” / “The Deficit” written on it, while Obama waits
near the wreck for keys. I would say that the average political cartoonists has
only made four drawings in a thirty year career [actual list: fatcat businessman, train wreck,
donkey and elephant] and just keeps switching the words each week
["Big Oil" to "Big Auto", "Pork Spending" to "Corporate Scandals", etc, etc].
These
cartoons are all from one day alone, at msnbc.com:
I would say, with about 98% certainty, I can probably describe every political cartoon
from the previous month without opening a single news paper: Bush, ducking a giant, room-sized
shoe with the word “Economy” / “Iraq” / “Torture” / “No clear BCS Winner” / “Scientology” /
(any half scandal you can think of) written on it.
